Do You Have a Plan for Your Wedding Cake?
Do You Have a Plan for Your Wedding Cake?
Your wedding cake functions as the focal point for your wedding reception’s decorations. As such, this wedding centerpiece often gets very elaborate. However, dreaming of a stunning wedding cake and ending up with one maybe two very different things if you don’t plan it right. If you’re in the beginning stages of cake planning, here are a few things to keep in mind.
Make Sure It’s Well Decorated
For all intents and purposes, a wedding cake is a work of art. As such, it requires an artist to create and making art takes time. That’s why you should always plan on ordering your cake at least six months in advance of your wedding. In fact, the earlier you can order your cake, the better. This gives you time to look at a number of different cake options, to discuss the price with the cake artist and to save up the money to pay for it. It also gives you time to contact an artist to make a specialty topper if that’s what you want to do.
Where Will it Be Stored?
Statistics suggest that 1 in 6 Americans will contract a food-borne illness this year. This frightening statistic can certainly make the thought of taking your cake out of its box on your wedding day a bit sobering. You don’t want your guests to get sick after all. To prevent that from happening, you want to store it in the refrigerator, making sure to keep it at temperatures from 30 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit. It’ll be okay this way for up to a week. If it’s stored any longer than that, you run the risk of attracting the bacteria that cause food-borne illnesses.
Do You *Really* Want a Cake?
While the big, beautiful white cake still reigns supreme at most weddings, there are some other trends, like pies, cupcakes or even so-called naked cakes, that are getting more popular these days. Each of these alternatives gives you the opportunity to do something unique at your wedding, without adding a significant amount to your budget’s bottom line (within reason). Ultimately, you may still go with a more traditional cake, but you owe to yourself to consider other options, given the importance of a wedding.
Most soon-to-be-married people spend a lot of time thinking about their wedding cake. They do face some practical considerations; the cake needs to be big enough to feed everyone at the wedding, for example. However, it represents so much more than that. As such, it’s best to make your plans for your wedding cake really far in advance of your wedding to ensure that nothing gets left out of your plans for this important wedding detail.
